COURSE LENGTH AND DURATION

  • 10 hours over 4 weeks with weekly discussions and assignments
  • Course begins February 11.
  • Coursework needs to be completed by March 16.

PRE-ASSIGNMENT

  • Complete the Academy Orientation to to gain familiarity with the ICC Academy. You'll learn to submit sample assignments, comment on discussions, take a short quiz and view grades


COURSE SYLLABUS

Week 1 Objectives - Coaching the Whole Person

  • Overview of the basic tools and skills involved in coaching communication.
  • Understand the connection between coaching and the mission, vision and values of the Institute for Cultural Communicators
  • Explore how competence, character and connection assist in the transformation of next generation Christians
  • Develop a mindset of personal development in the process of becoming an effective coach

 

Week 2 Objectives - Coaching the Body

  • Comprehend that our actions speak louder than words
  • Explore how body position, facial expression, and power of delivery support effective communication
  • Experiment with gestures and mannerisms to develop a character’s persona

 

Week 3 Objectives - Coaching the Voice

  • Develop strategies to assist students to use the tools of pitch, pace and pause
  • Gain a deeper understanding of articulation, enunciation, pronunciation

 

Week 4 Objectives - Coaching the Mind

  • See the value of focused attention in promoting transformation
  • Embrace the value of being calm and assertive to promote learning for both coach and student
  • Respond and interpret student behaviors in a coaching session
  • Awareness of the role that emotions have in the outcomes of a coaching session
  • Anticipate next steps in the coaching journey

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mary Gunther understands what it means to operate in a rapidly changing environment. One of the second class of women ever to graduate from the United States Naval Academy and the mother of nine, she has been involved in leadership education for the past 25+years. After attending her first ICC conference in 2005, she then brought ICC conferences to Maryland and started the first ICC Chapter there.


Mary’s interests are varied and diverse: from graphic design, organizational health, latest tech trends, and visual storytelling. Along with her experience and training in leadership development, Mary holds a certificate in Art Integration across Curriculum from the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as well as a certificate in Christian Nonprofit Leadership from Christian Leadership Alliance. She assumed her role as Chief Influence Officer for ICC in June 2017. Mary lives in Annapolis, MD with her husband and a rapidly changing number of children at any given time.
